Science
Objectives
- To inspire students to actively explore science, and foster their self-directed learning and overall scientific literacy. Students can develop a serious and rigorous scientific attitude through inquiry-based activities.
- To strengthen Values Education by encouraging a positive attitude towards life in students.
- To enhance students' understanding of national technological development and security, and appreciation of country's achievements which foster their sense of national identity.
- To encourage students to care for individuals from different social backgrounds and use scientific knowledge to help them to solve everyday problems.
- To use interactive and engaging teaching methods to arouse students' interest in science, and create a safe learning environment to nurture students' pursuit of advanced scientific knowledge.
- To unleash students' STEM potentials, develop their curiosity and positive attitude towards nature and technological world.
Characteristics of the Curriculum
Inquiry-Based Learning
The Science Curriculum emphasises inquiry-based learning. It focuses on both horizontal and vertical exploration experiences, and provides systematic exposure to various scientific areas while fostering students' scientific literacy. The curriculum is divided into four main areas, each linked to specific teaching units. Learning experiences are connected with students' daily lives, and various inquiry activities are designed to develop students' abilities in scientific investigation and problem solving.
Science Exploration Activities
Students engage in different scientific inquiry activities tailored to the curriculum. These hands-on experiments in the laboratory allow them to grasp scientific knowledge and concepts systematically, build essential scientific skills, and enhance their scientific literacy.
STEM Education
The science curriculum integrates STEM education elements and utilise technologies such as artificial intelligence, data loggers, 3D printing, virtual reality, and data processing programmes. Engineering design activities further reinforce students' understanding across science, technology, mathematics, and engineering, which promote learning through inquiry while nurturing creativity and innovative thinking.
Science-talented Programme
The Science-talented Programme is established to cater for students who are passionate and talented in technology and innovation. Students are encouraged to participate in local and national competitions in innovation and aerospace technology and specialised training and activities will be provided for them.
School-based Curriculum in Primary 6
The Primary 6 Science Curriculum emphasises practical science investigation skills, the use of laboratory equipment and safety regulations. English is adopted as the medium of instruction to facilitate transition from Primary Six to Form One.
